Historic Preservation

At Owen Masonry, we believe that historic buildings are more than structures—they are enduring expressions of craftsmanship, culture, and community. Our historic preservation work is dedicated to honoring that legacy through expert brick and stone restoration grounded in both tradition and technical excellence.

With decades of hands-on experience, we’ve proudly restored some of Minnesota’s most iconic landmarks. Our portfolio includes the celebrated F. Scott Fitzgerald House (also known as Summit Terrace), the National Farmers’ Bank of Owatonna—a National Historic Landmark designed by Louis Sullivan—and numerous stately homes along the famed Summit Avenue. These projects reflect our deep respect for architectural history and our ability to deliver precise, award-winning results.

Owen Masonry is experienced in working closely with local heritage preservation commissions and adheres to The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. We understand the importance of material compatibility, proper mortar selection, and detail fidelity when restoring aged brickwork and intricately carved stone.

Our founder, Kay Owen, is a master bricklayer and stonemason trained in London, England. With a career rooted in old-world technique and guided by a genuine respect for historic architecture, Kay finds great fulfillment when entrusted with the care of historically significant buildings. Each project is approached with patience, precision, and pride—whether it’s a civic landmark or a private residence with a storied past.

At Owen Masonry, we are committed to preserving the artistry and integrity of the past while ensuring each structure remains strong and beautiful for generations to come. If you are the steward of a historic property, we would be honored to help you preserve its legacy—one stone, one brick, one detail at a time.
